Service-Learning Program

Clapp's Nursing Center is a proud participant of Guilford County's High School Student's Service-Learning Program. Through this program students have the opportunity to receive a Service-Learning Diploma and Exemplary Award. Student's participate in five components: investigation, preparation & planning, action, reflection and demonstration. This program extends beyond volunteer service of a few hours or that which is needed to complete a senior project. Through this program students begin volunteering as early as ninth grade and have the opportunity to volunteer at several Service-Learning Program Providers to gain a variety of experiences while developing their skills and character. The relationship the student develops with the service learning provider is one of a mentorship. The volunteer hours can be used when applying for college.
The Service-Learning Program is a relatively new program which is being promoted in high schools. Students are required to complete a Service-Learning Application. Participants are required to complete Clapp's volunteer orientation, pass a TB test, volunteer when activity staff are scheduled, be at least 13 years old and volunteer with the activity department only.

Insurance Information

Many insurance companies have open enrollment annually. If your loved ones insurance changes, including prescription drug plans, please inform the social workers. There are some plans Clapp's Nursing Center does not participate in and therefore cannot accept. Our facility will need a copy of the new insurance card. Our receptionist is happy to make a copy for you. Thank you!

Merry Christmas to our families, volunteers and those in the community! We appreciate all you do for our residents throughout the year! Thank you to those who participated in our Angel Tree Program and helped the residents open their gifts.
Special Thank You to Home Instead for including 20 of our residents in their Be a Santa to a Senior Program and to Bethlehem United Methodist Church for sponsoring 25 residents in our Angel Tree Program. The response from the community was overwhelming. We wish you a blessed New Year!

Angel Tree 2011

This year our Angel Tree is located in our Private Dining Room. Our goal is to have a gift for each resident. We ask that gifts be returned by Friday, December 16th to the activity room in a gift bag. We also need volunteers to help Santa and activity staff pass out the gifts and assist residents in opening their gift on Friday, December 23rd. Silent Auction

Clapp's Nursing Center's Activity Department Silent Auction featuring seven pastel works by monthly guest artist and Pleasant Garden resident Jane Coltrane Jones .
Jane volunteers at both Clapp's Nursing Center and Clapp's Assisted Living facility. Her works are throughout both facilities.
The Silent Auction begins Tuesday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m. and closes Thursday, September 8th at 4:00 p.m.
Winners will be notified by 5:00 p.m. and may pick up work on Friday, September 9th.
Each piece is framed and measures 16" X 20".
The work will be displayed in our lobby and front lounge.
Bid forms will be located in the front lounge on the counter under the supply cabinets.
The opening bid fro each piece is $20.00.
Proceeds will be used by the Activity Department to fund special programs for our residents.

Social Services Department

The Social Service Department at Clapp's Nursing Center helps residents and family members with a variety of services. Alison Kennedy is our Admissions Coordinator and the Social Worker for residents residing on our Gold Hall. She is also the go to person for residents needing to see the eye doctor or psychologist. Residents residing on our Gold Hall can talk with Alison about their concerns or needs. Families of Gold Hall residents need to contact Alison when they need to set up a family care plan meeting to discuss thier care or plans for discharge.

Elizabeth Santore is the Admissions Coordinator for our Assisted Living Facility and the Social Worker for residents residing on our Green Hall. She is also the go to person for residents needing to see the podiatrist or the dentist. Residents residing on Green Hall can talk with Elizabeth about their concerns or needs. Families of Green Hall residents need to contact Elizabeth when they need to set up a family care plan meeting to discuss thier care or plans for discharge.

Both of our Social Workers arrrange transportation for residents who are unable to travel to appointments in the family car. Family members need to accompany residents to all appointments.

Unlabeled clothing is kept in our laundry department for 30 days. Some missing items may be turned in to the receptionist or to the social worker. Please notify your social worker of any lost items.

Social Workers are patient advocates and can work as a liaison between families/residents and facility administration. They strive to ensure all patient needs are met both in the facility and when they return to the community.

The activity department is accepting donations of baskets children can use for the event and candy for the eggs. Please bring donations to the activity office or leave with the receptionist. Donation slips are available upon request.

Details: A trained professional form Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Homes will be presenting a nationally recognized safety program that teaches children how to differentiate between good and bad strangers, the common lures abductors use, how to "get away, right away", and how to help find help when needed.

Alternatives to Volunteering Your Time

Are you interested in volunteering but short on time to spare? Consider sponsoring one of our parties or donating supplies to enhance the quality of life for the elderly in a nursing facility.

For example:

The Clapp's Library located in the Activity Room is currently in need of Large Print Bibles and The Bible on CD.
Sponsor a party by providing a cake or other store bought food item. We currently have a sponsor for our Birthday Bash for the remainder of the year but we have many other social events throughout the year that you could sponsor.
Email interesting pictures you've taken when traveling or bring them by on a CD for the Activity Department to use for their Arm Chair Traveler program
Donate fresh flowers for the residents to make flower arrangements with.
Donate bingo prizes, board games you're no longer using, word search books, crossword puzzle books, cards or craft supplies.
Make a donation for live music programs for the residents.

March Activity Highlight of the Month

This month the Activity Department would like to highlight our Music Therapist, Jane Maydian, MT-BC. Jane provides music therapy services to our residents twice a month. This activity is held on the first and second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. and alternates between the Living Rooms. Jane also provides in room visits for our residents who need sensory stimulation but are unable to participate in the group music therapy program. Music Therapy is a structured music program utilizing instruments and singing that tap into the memory and provides an avenue for communication, stress relief and self expression to participants regardless of age or mental health condition.

Our Musical Memories program by entertainer Shane Elks on the 16th of February was made possible by the Mamie Lewis Memorial.

The Clapp's Family, Activity Department and Residents would like to thank the family and friends of Mamie Lewis who provided the memorial for live music programs at Clapp's Nursing Center.

Families interested in sending memorials to Clapp's Nursing Center may specify how they desire the memorial to be used by the facility. Some families collect the memorials and then send them to the facility while others note where memorials are to be sent. Clapp's will notify families of memorials received so that you may thank the person. If you have any questions regarding memorials, please contact the facility.

March is National Quilt Day

Community member and quilt maker Nancy Jo Smith will be joining us as we talk about quilt making and their unique patterns. We encourage you to bring your special quilts and share the stories behind them.

February Activity Highlight of the Month

This month the Activity Department would like to highlight our Massage Therapist, Donny Bauer. Due to popular demand, Donny now provides massage therapy services to our residents twice a month. This activity is held on the second and fourth of each month on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Activity Room. Sign up is required as Donny is only able to see eight residents per session. The sign up is located in the Activity Room. Resident's may sign up once a month. Just let the Activity Department know if you are interested. Residents are welcome to watch Donny in action to see if it's a service they would like to receive.

Therapeutic Benefits of Pet Visits

At Clapp's Nursing Center, pets are no strangers to our residents or staff. We have a chihuahua named Princess, shown here, and a recent addition to the family, a yorkie named Tucker. From time to time other members of our staff bring their pets in to visit the residents. We are blessed with a black lab named Luke who comes twice a month to visit the residents and a boxer named Dixie who also provides pet therapy visits once every two to three months. All these visiting pets are fabulous but they cannot replace the feeling that comes from holding and loving on your own pet. At Clapp's we encourage families to bring in their loved ones pets. Our requirements are that the pet be on a leash, house trained and a copy of the pets most recent rabies vaccination is given to the Activity Director. Some times families are concerned their loved ones pet may act inappropriate and scratch their loved one. This is a legitimate concern and caution should be taken but often the pet is just as relieved to see their owner is okay as their owner is to see they are okay. The act of petting a dog or cat stimulates the nerves and the movement increases the blood flow. It is also a relaxing movement which is calming to a person with dementia or a person with anxiety. A pet interacts with a loved one the way an object, such as a family photo, cannot do providing an unconditionally love we all need and seek. Clapp's Nursing Center's Activity Department is pleased to announce that Artist Dr. Richard Fields will be here on Tuesday, February 1st at 3:00 p.m. to share some of his work with the residents. Dr. Fields is a retired dentist from Pleasant Garden who has been creating works of art since his college days. He recently spoke about his work at the senior adult lunch at the Pleasant Garden Baptist Church. If you missed that event, you are welcome to come to this program. Friends and family members are also invited to join their loved one for this program. It will be held in our Main Dining Room.

Is your family missing an item?
Some lost and found items are turned in at the front desk while others are turned in to your family members Social Worker. Please check with Alison Kennedy, Social Worker for the Gold Hall, and Elizabeth Santore, Social Worker for the Green Hall, if your loved one is missing an item.
For missing clothing, please check with our Laundry Department. Clothing that is brought in and not labeled does not make its way back to your loved one but is kept for 30 days in our Laundry Department. The Laundry Staff will be happy to check the unclaimed clothing rack for your loved ones items. Remember to bring all new clothing to the Laundry Department to be labeled. Thank you.

Christmas Day

Families are asked to please let your loved one's nurse know if you will be taking your loved one out of the facility on Christmas Day. This gives staff adequate time to prepare any medications your loved one may need while out of the facility, cancel their lunch or dinner tray and make sure your loved one is looking their best.

If you are planning to eat Christmas Day lunch with your loved one at the facility, please be sure to purchase a meal ticket prior to the 25th. Your meal will be served at your loved one's scheduled meal time.

No meal tickets will be sold on Christmas Day.

Fiber Optic Holiday Trees

Resident's enjoy having their rooms decorated for the holiday season just as we enjoy decorating our homes. Families and volunteers are welcome to bring miniature Christmas trees for the residents of Clapp's but before you pick out that pre-lite tree be sure it's Fiber Optic. Miniature artificial or live trees are allowed but not with Christmas lights. This is in accordance with the Fire Safety Regulations. Many Fiber Optic trees are available at department stores. We appreciate your understanding and hope you have a safe holiday season.

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity this holiday season?

Come lend a hand preparing Angel Tree gifts for delivery.

Volunteer are needed from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 20th, Tuesday, December 21 st and Wednesday, December 22nd. Come to the Activity Room. Even 30 minutes can make a difference.

Or come lend a hand passing out Angel Tree gifts, taking pictures or assisting residents in opening their gifts on Thursday, December 23rd.

If you can help, meet the Activity Staff in the Activity Room by 2:30 p.m. We should be done by 5:00 p.m. but any time you can spend with us will be appreciated.

Angel Tree

Volunteer Wanda Linz

The highlighted volunteer of the month for November is Wanda Linz.

Wanda conducts a Reading Group once a month and a Poetry Group once a month. Wanda is a LifeVerse Poetry Facilitator with the Greensboro Public Library and coordinates the Pleasant Garden Community Readers Book Club. Each month she assists the residents in expressing themselves through poetry. The poem is published in the Clapp'er Yapp'er and posted on the bulletin board near our lobby. Kids For Christ

Special thank you to "Kids For Christ" from the United Apostolic Church of Prayer. This youth group visited in October to do a craft activity with our residents and will be back Saturday, November 20th at 3:00 p.m. They also made colorful birthday cards for the residents who had an October birthday.

Reminscing with Layman Cash

October's highlighted activity of the month is Reminiscing with Layman Cash.

Volunteer Layman Cash conducts this activity once a month for the resident's of Clapp's. He puts a great amount of effort into preparing for this activity and often enlists the help of friends to provide some live music to enhance his program. Each month the topic relates to what is going on in that particular season or the holiday. During the program, Mr. Cash shares his poetry and a few words of wisdom. Stop in some time to experience this wonderful program.

Pick out your best Halloween costume & bring your children and grandchildren to Trick-or-Treat at Clapp's Nursing Center on Friday, October 29th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Residents participating in the Trick-or-Treat event will have a picture of a pumpkin on their door. They will pass out candy while it lasts. Staff, families, volunteers and members of the community and local churches are welcome to bring their children and grandchildren to this event.

After two months off, volunteer Dianne Smith is back and the residents couldn't be happier! Dianne adopted our Red Hat Society and has transformed our month meetings into a spectacular event not to be missed. Because of Dianne this event has become so popular we now hold it in our main dining room. Card Sharks

This month's highlighted activity of the month is Card Sharks with Skip.

Volunteer Skip Kochem now comes twice a month due to popular demand to play Black Jack, 21, Russian Roulette and other casino card games with the residents. This is a small group activity of 4-6 players. The activity department has card holders available for the residents. This month this activity is offered on Tuesday, September 14th and Tuesday, September 28th at 10:00 a.m. in the activity room.

Racing at Ace Speedway

The residents of Clapp's are huge fans of Patrick Coleman and his #81 race car. Patrick placed 4th in the points on April 2nd and 3rd in the points on April 9th. Patrick races every Friday night. Come out to Ace Speedway to see Patrick and you just might see a group of our residents rooting him on.

Going Electronic

If you haven't been in our facility lately, you may not have seen the new additions to our hallways and nurse's stations. The nursing center is in the process of transitioning over to electronic medical records. This process will be done in phases to give us time to train staff. Join our Volunteer Team

The Activity Department at Clapp's is always on the look out for volunteers. Interested persons need to complete a volunteer application. Once your application has been reviewed the Activity Director will call you to schedule a 30 minute volunteer orientation. It is a requirement that all volunteers have a TB test which is done at the facility. Once your test has been read, you are ready to volunteer. Volunteers will receive training before they are allowed to volunteer independently. Student volunteers may only volunteer when activity staff are present. Hours for students are therefore limited. Please note, the number of student volunteers is limited to three at a time.

Clapp's Walkers

The Clapp's Walkers will once again participate in the annual Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk on Saturday, May 15th at Center City Park, Greensboro, NC.

Volunteers are needed to assist activity staff at the St. Patrick's Day Social on Wednesday, March 17th at 3:00 p.m. in the Dining Room.

Volunteers are needed to assist residents with flower arranging on Monday, March 15th at 2:30 in the Activity Room.

Volunteers are needed to visit residents in their room.

Volunteers are needed to assist activity staff at the Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, April 2nd at 3:00 p.m.

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg Hunt at Clapp's Nursing Center
Friday, April 2, 2010 from 3:00-4:00 p.m.
Families and staff are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to this event. Please remember to bring a basket or bag to collect eggs as we are not able to provide them. Anyone who has baskets they would like to donate are asked to drop them off at the front desk or bring them to the activity room.

Volunteers are needed to assist with this event. Please contact Jennifer if you can assist in stuffing eggs and distributing eggs for the hunt. We are accepting donations of individually wrapped candy and prizes to stuff the eggs. Thank you!

Census Time

The Census Bureau has advised they will count the residents living at our facility on April 1st. If your family member is at our facility at that time and you complete a census for them elsewhere, please do not count them or they will be counted twice. Please note: This will not effect their pay status.
